A balanced diet is a vital need. However, in most of the countries where CODEGAZ is involved in this field, around 40 to 80% of the population were below the poverty line and are exposed to malnutrition.
The intention of CODEGAZ is not to act in the same way as of the other big organizations specialised in the fight against malnutrition. However, the association chose to promote two innovative solutions that contribute to the treatment of malnutrition. Its objective is to conduct the pilot-programs, aiming to raise awareness and to promote the dissemination of these innovations.
SPIRULINE
Spirulina is an algae cultivated in freshwater ponds that has an exceptional nutritional values (mainly protein content of 65%). It is used especially to meet the deficiencies of malnutrition in the children.
It has a huge advantage of being able to be produced by the benefited population through transfer of know-how that accompany always the projects of CODEGAZ in this area.

RICE INTENSIFICATION SYSTEM (RIS)
The RIS was discovered accidentally in Madagascar during a year of drought which led to strong modifications in the farming techniques of rice. During this year, the harvests observed were by a factor of 2 to 6. Since then, the SIR technique has demonstrated its effectiveness in significantly increases in agricultural outputs of the crop which is the staple food of half of the world population. These techniques improve equally the ecological impact of rice cultivation on the environment.
CODEGAZ has completed two pilot projects in Cambodia and Madagascar with an objective of educating the groups of rice farmers in several regions. The association is planning to expand its RIS programs in other countries where it is establised.
